True and thanks. The OP came in here asking for options because he's going to homeschool. He didn't want some windowlickers telling him his child was going to be Forrest Gump because of it.

School is more than just learning text books.
There are a lot of things we keep kids from that they "don't have to learn on their own" all the time. It's called parenting and setting your child up for success.

A distraction can be almost anything, including a teacher's lack of ability, teaching the class to the lowest level (NCLB), stupid mouthbreathing kids that don't allow for proper learning environments, etc.

Are you seriously dense enough to think that parents can teach better than teachers who have years of experience and have worked perfecting the art of teaching for years? I'm not saying public teachers are amazing...but they're better than MOST parents out there. You must have been homeschooled. Yes both my parents did have to work...not sure what that has to do with anything.

I understand if your kid has some sort of handicap already, and as was already mentioned, gets easily distracted in class. But to take a perfectly good child and not allow them to go through school...that's wrong.
I have yet to see any teacher public school has to offer that is worth writing home about. Do they exist? Ya, sure they do, but they are few and far between. I speak from experience on both side of the subject. Do you? Or is this just some thing you were taught by an awesome public school teacher? Having both parents IS relevent, which proves you really don't know what the hell you're talking about (again). I wouldn't suggest having any type of home school program without a parent dedicated to it. If you went all the way through public schools without unnecessary distractions, maybe it's you with the handicap. I like how you're ready to make everyone's decision for their kid with that last statement. Why would we make any decisions about our children without your blessing?

That's how it works, unless they are held under a specific curriculum by an independent school district.

Maybe it's because you only notice the bad ones, but homeschooled kids that played on my sports teams, transferred into our jr high/high school, or that I met in college were fucking weird. Did meet a normalish hot chick in college that had been homeschooled, she loooooooooooooooved the cock, good times.

It does the child a disservice IMO and is almost like child abuse.

Again, maybe it's like hair plugs, you only notice the fucked up ones

I'm not a fan of home schooling myself. Just playing a devil's advocate here from what I saw of parents doing this overseas myself. Granted, their kids were nice - but not what I consider normal, jolly kids.

Anyway, the one edge I think home schooling could give is specific one on one attention that professional educators can not give. You stick a parent in a classroom they'll fail for sure. However, assuming they understand the material I'm fairly certain the amount of attention they can give personally to their kids would help compensate for their lack of in-classroom experience.

With that said, I think in a decent school I'd rather all the other lessons be learned - at least all the stuff I learned in a public school (personal responsibility, social...fighting...etc) as opposed to possibly over protecting at home. Besides, I'm paying those damned taxes - might as well make some use of that money.

No offense, but sounds like a personal issue. I coasted through high school and graduated valedictorian, coasted through college and graduated summa cum laude with an economics degree, graduated with honors in my masters program, and am one test away from earning the CFA charter. I guess I'm just self-motivated.
