My wife took the kids to Surf Side last year and rented a house for the week.

It ended up being about $850 for the house, and driving down there is a heck of a lot cheaper than airfare.

They fished/swam/etc.... Very reasonable vacation.

Panama City beach, you can fly into Panama City now on SWA and PCB is maybe 30 minutes away. Lots of deals on condos, that have full stocked kitchens and washers/dryers. We used to go once a year, the kitchens are nice you can buy breakfast and lunch items and then only go out to dinner, cuts down on money going out for all three meals. Going into the ocean the W/D help with taking care of your towels and clothes. The place we stayed at was Edgewater, they had a giant pool and arcades and PCB has a lot of kids activites, go karts, nice resturants on the strip. Its a little more quiet than Destin/Ft.Walton beach, about another 90 miles east. We drive, its about a 10 hour drive, same as going to South Padre Island, but way better beaches.

Gulf Shores! White beaches, and clear blue water. Its gorgeous. We rented a house out there for a week back in 06. It was a lot of fun.
