Are doctors arrogant and self-righteous by choice?

Arrogant: exaggerating one's own worth or importance in an overbearing manner.

I dont see myself as that. I am just confident because everything that I put forth an effort to do I do well...and I have the necessary drive to be successful.

Self-righteous: convinced of one's own righteousness especially in contrast with the actions and beliefs of others : narrow-mindedly moralistic.

I can see where some may think this about me but if that's the case, then everyone is self-righteous about their beliefs and opinions. I feel strongly about what I believe in and will defend them if needed. However, I dont feel that I put others down in order to make myself feel better. That's just not me.

Arrogant - I hope you are arrogant. I want my doctors to be arrogant. I trust their arrogance.

Self-righteous - Sure you put down others to make yourself feel better. If you didn't we wouldn't have threads about gays and fat people. It's ok.

Nah...I wouldnt mind having a really nice car but each time I think about buying one, I change my mind and cant bring myself to spend that much money on a car. When I get finished paying for my mom and step dad's stupid IRS debt, I will be in a better position to get a nice car...but it wont be a Porsche.

Once I felt comfortable enough to buy nice cars I did. After two years I realize, meh, drives just like my truck and sold them. Wife still pimps her Mercedes.

I also don't get pissed when someone door dings me or the kids slam the door into the side of the garage.

Maybe one day I'll get 911 Turbo but for now I'm fine drive the piece of shit truck.

But to answer the OP's question yes. The ones that don't are greatly out weighed by those that do. So buy default, YES!

One of them is an orthopedic surgeon and the other is an anesthesiologist.

I have a cousin who is an orthopedic with a D.O. He seems to have a much more "middle class" life than these two. But like I said these two are pretty smart business people as well. Both are sizeable investments in private companies outside of medicine.

Well, to qualify it... he is an orthopedic surgeon and does a great practice with athletes in Dallas. I never make appointments with him on a Monday. Filled with weekend warriors those days!

Yup, I was jaded and "rough around the edges" long before getting into the medical field. But I do have some business sense and skills other than medicine.

Do you or have you ever owned a Porsche? Isn't that the first thing a doctor is supposed to buy?

At my job, I talk with as many doctors as I can every day, 5 days a week, and have been doing so for the past 6 1/2 years. There are some real arrogant bastards for sure, but I've found that about half of them are just average folks, and some of them are more humble and kind and down-to-Earth than just about anyone else I know. I will say that it makes a difference which specialty they are. I've found that pediatricians and geriatricians are usually the coolest and easiest to deal with. On the flip side (sorry Dave), emergency medicine physicians tend to be the most arrogant and also the most "rough around the edges". I don't necessarily think it is the job that makes them that way, but more likley that they are just that way and that leads them into that particular field of work. As for money, I deal with mostly primary care physicians (Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, etc) and few of those docs are in it primarily for the money. A lot of them will never see $150k per year, and they spend the first 10 years of their career paying off student loans.

Oh, and a LOT of these doctors have zero business savvy or even common sense. It's like they are smart about medicine, and there isn't enough room in the brain to be an expert on anything else. And some of them are real basket-cases, too. I have all kinds of stories about crazy, off-the-wall, bizarre behavior that some of these people engage in.
