My first car was a 92 ford ranger. Ran it up to 318k miles before I sold it. It was a stick. No problems at all. Had to replace the clutch twice. Recharged the A/C twice.

    Or a Crown Vic.

Yea, i agree. I was seriously thinking that as well.

not enough power to get your kid in trouble. of coure, there is plenty of room to have some fun in the back though and probably shitty gas mileage.

Gas mileage on one that isn't lifted isnt bad. I have seen 23-25 HWY. Repair bills are dirt cheap.

yea, i got the runt of the litter in high school. I ended up with an old 85 cherokee with the v6 2.x ltr. damn motor was a turd. I think it was the same engine used in the s10's at the time. So, yes, when I recommend it, I recommend the 4.0.

+1 on a regular cab Ranger. Having 4-5 peers in his vehicle is dangerous at his age. A Ranger will still let him haul stuff when he moves.

He can learn to drive a stick later, on his own, if he wants to. No need to force it on him. A young driver is better off with an auto.

I would lean towards an extended cab mid size truck, Ranger, Nissan etc. If he keeps it after he joins the service the extended cab will give him a place to store his stuff when he goes out of town or when he is pcs'ing between duty stations. Plus he can find a cover or cap dirt cheap. Insurance and repair bills should be low for it as well.

Not sure the location of the Navy bases, but 4WD would be an option as well.

I had a 99' F 150 ext. Cab 5.4L 2wd and loved it. Had 250K and not a damn thing was wrong with it. Everything worked perfectly, never had a light turn on the dash.
Wish I still had it and never traded it for my stang sometimes.
