Tell him hr shouldn't limit himself to Texas. The guy I know who does land manning is in New Mexico for three weeks then is coming back to Pecos for about y weeks. His work is steady and he keeps money stacked for the occasional dry stretch but over all he does very well for himself.
Another guy I know does work on an oil man's collection of motor vehicles. His big project for 2009-10 was building a land speed car to take to Bonneville and try to set a record for piston driven vehicles. He is a retired aircraft guy . He does this as a fun time for him.

Sitting in their equipment manager's office I asked about them and he said, "well, _______ loves to hunt (paid $150k for an elephant permit and didnt even kill one)... oh, and he owns a P-51."

Hell, that's a land rig day rate. Offshore day rates are ~$88k for jackups and ~$270k for floaters right now. For that $$$ they would go shit on the front porch of the White House at 3am if it kept the rigs running.

I got a text from a field guy a couple days ago when we were troubleshooting some controls issues. It was something like, "Hey, my plane lands down there at 10pm, then 2 hour drive. I'll call you if the cal doesn't work... don't have too many beers before then."
First thought: "Dammit, I really hope I don't end up on the phone at 2am troubleshooting shit."
Second thought: "Could be worse... at least I'm not in field service!"
I have a ton of respect for what oil field workers do.
