The thing that really turns me off about being a mechanic is that there's not a lot of room for growth on the mechanic side. I could go from mechanic-lead-supervisor-regional manager and rm's make around $70,000/year. Most mechanics in this field make more than the supervisor so there's not a lot of motivation in it for me. I'd rather not have my phone ringing off the hook at all hours just for the title of supervisor. It seems like the drilling side has a lot more opportunities for advancement and increase in pay. Iv actually been trying to shift over to another side of natural gas operations unsuccessfully. I dont know anyone else in the field and I guess 4 years as a compressor mechanic isnt what people in other areas are looking for.

I agree it's not for everyone. I've talked to alot people wanting to get in but don't want to get their hands dirty. They prefer to drive a truck or something easy.

Exactly, it's hard work. I make sure to tell anyone I hear say there are no jobs out there that if they really wanted to work, O&G has lots of high paying options. But that's the problem...they don't really want to work. Everyone just wants a paycheck.
