Ford to discontinue v8 motors in mustang, f-150 after 2017

    If Ford abandons the V8 I see the possibility of several things happening:

    1. Customers flee from Ford to GM or Dodge and sales of the F series takes a huge dive, or
    2. GM & Dodge immediately follow Fords lead and drop their V8s too, or
    3. Ford keeps the V8 in the lineup but charges a very hefty premium for it, milks it for a few years, and then kills it. No new development will occur on it - kind of a death by neglect like GM did with the 454 in the later years.

    #1 or #3 will be bad for Ford I believe.

    While you may be right, I'd like to think that there will always be a niche market for new gas powered vehicles.

    At the very least, there will be a couple of decades worth of support for what's on the road now. I shudder to think there will ever be an America where all 57 Chevy's (or whatever, pick your favorite classic car) are boat anchors because you can't get a gallon of gas.

    Same here. SCrew F250 4x4 6.7 XLT is averaging 18.5mpg, and F150 4x4 5.0 XLT is averaging 16.3mpg.

    The key word is passenger cars. If it is sold as and registered as a commercial vehicle it is exempt from CAFE.

    Tracked by registration. They are registered differently. Yes, they are and will continue to be used for personal use as well, but they must be registered to a business. If you do not have the right registration qualifications, you won't be able to register it. That is why I said Gov. involvement. Like I said, I have recently went through the process and you have to register in person every year with the required ID card for Farm use. Commercial is very similar I am told. ID card expires the end of the year the following year it is issued. So it must be renewed every year. If you look, you will see most do have the same plates as F150s and everything else, but every once in a while you will see one that says COMM TRUCK or FARM TRUCK. Will be a plain white plate with red letters saying the above, just above the plate number. My F250 and 1 of my trailers are registered this way now. The F150 will change over once the tags expire this year.

    If they don't manage it that way, after several years of this type of policy, there will be less out there anyway as if it is only managed at the time of sale, there will be less F250 and larger sold in a given year.

    If this was true, why did Ford develop a new flat plane crank V8 for the GT350 and GT350R. You mean to tell me they would abandon V8s on mass produced vehicles but still build a new one for extremely niche cars?

    Here's the thing, the CAFE rating is a fleet average. Ford can sell as many V8s as they want as long as they sell enough fuel efficient 4 bangers to stay above the average fuel economy requirement. Also, Chevy built a z06 vette that gets 29MILES PER FRIGGIN GALLON! You mean to tell me Ford can't get that out of the Coyote.

    I predict the following will happen..

    V8's will remain. Ford doesn't walk away from a profitable market. Cars and trucks will get lighter. Ford will get better fuel economy when their new 10 speed auto hits the market next year (Ford Raptor is confirmed to be getting this tranny). We will see DI and cylinder deactivation. However I see V8's being sold at a premium. Ford already charges an extra $700 (over the 2.7EBv6) for the 5.0 in the 2015 F150.

    EB 4 bangers will get better too. Ford wants to sell more of these. I predict it will become the standard engine in the Mustang. The base V6 will eventually die. Perhaps Ford will sell a small EB4 for the base Mustang to get it above 35 or 40mpg. There are plenty of people that want a fast looking, but very practical, car for a reasonable price. That will get the corporate average up enough to give us the V8 we want...

    They've been working on the ecoboost angle for quite a while now, and it's working. Hard to blame them for selling every big truck they can though. The margin on trucks is HUGE.
