I've done wireline, both open and cased hole, and hauled water. Both decent money but the schedule sucked. Did open hole in west Texas for schlumberger, did water hauling for pinnergy here in the dfw and surrounding area. Did cased hole with Key Energy that was sold to Universal wireline that was owned by a large drilling co that sold it to another wireline company in cresson. Too much uncertainty for me. I got out when they wanted me to go to N.Dakota in January. I asked if they realized it was cold and snowy there at that time of year.
As far as the being a driller or company man, they didn't start out there and have plenty of time in to get those positions.

The thing have to remember about those positions are they are all generally1099 contract positions. Some may include benefits, but most do not.

I have worked on the rigs, but I am in an office now. Much better lifestyle, and still great $. Had to put in my time in the field first.

The few company men that I've talked pay with have always told me they make $12-1500 a day. Now I guess that would depend on energy company and rig production.
